A record entry at the Dutch Spotted Sheep Society Premier Sale was met with the expected mixed trade. Females continued to sell well throughout, with many new flocks being established, and the top-quality rams were sought after for pedigree breeding.
Top on the day was Mr Robert Nicholson, Cannon Hall Farm, Barnsley, selling his shearling gimmer, Cannon Hall Faye, for 16,000gns to Mr Henry Jewitt, Sunnybank. Faye is sired by the renowned Drumhirk Decider who has bred many 5-figure progeny and has left his stamp across numerous notable flocks including Diamond, Hazelberry, Milltown & Johnstown. Faye’s dam was an imported ewe.
Selling for 12,000gns to JDR & JL Corbett, Wedderburn was Longfield Forest from Robert Nelson, Ballymena, Northern Ireland. Forest is out of Glencloy Brooklyn and is sired by the infamous Challoch Bearskin. Also from Mr Nelson, at 5,000gns to an undisclosed purchaser, was Longfield Florrie. Again sired by Challoch Bearskin and out of Highmead Edith.
Topping the male trade from M & R McCornick, Barquhill, was Westbroad Diego. Bred by Mr Duncan Welsh, Diego is sired by Ancholme Casper and is out of a Westbroad ewe. Diego sired Barquhill Faith, this year’s DSS breed champion at RHS, GYS and RWAS. He heads across the water to join Declan McGettigan, Brandon McClafferty, Dwyne Sheils and Rachel Gallagher after selling for 7,500gns.
Highest priced ewe lamb was the overall champion in the pre-sale show. Judged by Mr Gordon Troup, Gallowhill, Cnwch Gypsey Vanner was placed first in the very strong ewe lamb class (class A, lambs born from 01.01.2023 to 09.02.2023). She went on to be crowned female and overall champion before selling for 7,000gns. Sired by Import Dutchman (IM1850), another notable breeder within the Dutch Spotted Sheep, and out of homebred ewe, Cnwch Esperanza. ARP & DR Wilson sold this flashy ewe lamb to Ioan Jones.
Mr Nick Brown, Irthing Valley, received the highest price for a ram lamb when he sold Irthing Valley Goliath for 5,000gns. This Import Tank sired lamb sold in a two-way share to W J Bradley, Drumard, and M N Jones, Glan-Y-Mor.
