Jackson family retain top spot for three years on the trot
This was the third year the Dutch Spotted Sheep has had breed classes at The Royal Highland Show, which is held just outside Edinburgh. Our Judge was Liam Campbell from the Glencloy flock who made the journey over from Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. Entries for our breed had sold out once again and the number of spectators flocking to the show was at a record level.
Mr Campbell was faced with the challenging task of sorting through the mammoth 104 entries which comprised Members who had travelled the length and breadth of the United Kingdom – from Orkney to Northamptonshire. Entries were split across 4 classes with the biggest being the ewe lamb class comprising 32 entries.
Under glorious Edinburgh sunshine, the highly coveted Female Championship and Overall Supreme Champion was awarded to Ali & Hannah Jackson’s Tiptop Encor, who also made the final line-up in both prestigious interbreeds. Encor is a homebred three-shear ewe by Tiptop Diablo and out of Bellino, an import ewe. No stranger to the spotlight as she was fresh from her Interbreed success at Cumberland Show 10 days prior as well as winning her classes at both the Great Yorkshire and Royal Welsh last year. Ali and Hannah won the overall here in 2022 with Tiptop Diana and then in 2023 Robbie, their son, was triumphant with his shearling Barquhill Faith.
The Male Championship and Reserve Supreme Champion was awarded to Tommy Jackson’s Milltown Fireball King, who made the journey over from County Down. Fireball King is sired by Carlaustan Extrovert and out of the prolific stock ewe Diamond Destiny. He was also Reserve Male Champion at Balmoral this year and is full brother to Milltown Golden Balls, who made the headlines when a 50% share was sold for £20,000.
Reserve Female Champion and top shearling was awarded to ARP & DR Wilson’s Cnwch Gin Campari who is by the infamous Cnwch Emilio and out of Beech Hay Ceili. The Wilson’s also won the Group of 3.
Reserve Male Champion came from Nick Brown’s Irthing Valley flock with his spectacular ram lamb Irthing Valley He’s The Boss – this being the second year Irthing Valley have won at this show.
Our Judge Mr Campbell commented “This is the first time I have attended or judged at The Royal Highland Show. It has been the greatest honour and the quality of sheep presented was incredible – the breed is going from strength to strength and improving every year.”
The social was very much enjoyed by our Members on the Thursday afternoon and it ran into the early hours with a great atmosphere and camaraderie. It was brilliant to see entries at the show from a huge range of flocks – from seasoned campaigners to those who are relatively new to the breed and new to showing.
Well done to everyone who took part, supported the classes and helped champion our incredible breed.
